DIY: Give a KICK@** Maid Of Honor Speech

JT here formally known as the "Maid of Honor" to recount my speech giving experience for WW's Reception!!!

I'm pictured here on the right (I'm the girl). Yes, this was at the wedding and no I don't remember taking this picture but anyway... I digress...

So my speech: I'll be honest, I was four drinks in when I gave it and I ended up not using any of the versions of the speech I had intended (there were three) but if I say so myself people really loved it.

A few guidelines for giving a great speech:

  • MAX IT OUT AT 3 MINUTES. Mine was 2:22 exactly. I even said at the beginning that I would keep it short just so I remembered to do just that.
  • Use an anecdote. Relate it to recent events, music, movie, something that the crowd can really relate to.
  • Just talk about the couple. Like how you met them, your interactions and observations.
  • Make a take away. I wanted to make my speech a "What I learned about love from ____ and ____." People were really into that. I mean you should be able to find something from every couple because why else would they be getting married unless they had been putting something extraordinary into the relationship.
  • Use a format: beginning, middle and end (resolution). I was on the speech team in high school and my favorite competition was the impromptu speech. Impromptu speech was always 2 minutes long and you were always supposed to lead in with a few explanations, some witty observation and end it with a learning point. I somehow managed to pull out that formula (unbeknownst to me).
If you want some more points about speech making or would like me to type out some parts of my speech, I might just do that...

Free The Bride Relay Race

Has anyone ever played this game before? I am trying to figure out what the rules are from the video but it's hard to tell. The only thing I know for sure is that you are supposed to "drop it like it's hot" at the end.

Congrats to cousin/MOH for running 5K turkey trot!

My cousin/MOH/Co blogger ran the 5 K turkey race this year! I was not able to do it this year due to cooking a thanksgiving meal all by 1 pm but you can bet I will be there next year! A 5K I can do but not a marathon or 1/2 marathon like my cousin. She is a hard core runner & I'm very proud of her. If you're a runner you should check out her site *here* it has everything you need to know to be a runner in L.A.

Super Cute Maid of Honor V Neck

Since it's Black Friday, I am shopping online and found a ton of cute stuff I wanted on weddingchicks.com - I want this Maid of Honor Tee (hint hint - just kidding WW) it says "My Anchor: Maid of Honor." All of their vintage tees are really really really... dare I say it? Cute!

Book Report: The Quintessential Wedding Guide ... Maid of Honor

Wanna get your MOH in line? Make her read this book! Granted, it's pretty thin, but I FINALLY got around to reading The Quintessential Wedding Guide ... Maid of Honor

Great read. Lots of good tips on etiquette, planning, roles and how to best approach any bride 911 in a cool, calm, collected spunky side kick manner. I am not a big fan of the cover (seriously, I almost didn't buy it) but content is well worth it!

Top 10 Wedding Movies of All Time? You Decide!

We really love girly flicks. And nothing gets girlier than a good wedding movie. I did a lil search online and decided that I agree with this top ten list from glam.com (added a few comments of my own) - we've seen most of these already so... any movies you'd like to suggest?

10 – In and Out, 1997
Haven't seen this one but with Kevin Kline and Joan Cusack playing starring roles, I'll have to cue it up in the "to be seen" movie list!

9 – Sweet Home Alabama, 2002
Reese Witherspoon has to choose between Patrick Dempsey and Josh Lucas. Hey Reese, since you have a spare, can you help a sister out? *wink*

8 – The Wedding Singer, 1998
Karaoke, true love, comedy and the 80s. These are a few of my favorite things.

7 – Honeymoon in Vegas, 1992
Nicolas Cage + Sarah Jessica Parker. Fact: I've seen this movie like six times.

6 – Runaway Bride, 1999
Julia Roberts is Maggie Carpenter, the small-town the bride on the go in this sweet romantic comedy that reunites Roberts with Richard Gere. Hilarity ensues.

5 – Wedding Crashers, 2005
Vince Vaughn + Owen Wilson = 90 minutes of fun.

4 – Four Weddings and a Funeral, 1994
Hugh Grant before the hooker scandal. Love it!

3 – The Wedding Planner, 2001
J-Lo is a smart and sexy Wedding Planner who ends up stealing her biggest client's husband to be (sorry, had to give it to you straight like that).

2 – My Best Friend’s Wedding, 1997
Another awesome Julia Robert's flick! And not the happy ending you would expect (non-spoiler spoiler alert!)

1 – Father of the Bride, 1991
Classic. Enough said.

Just Married: Make a Statement

I came across an article in the LA Times today about PETA members who used their wedding as a way to protest animal cruelty (horse-drawn carriages - really?!) - I thought that was pretty cute. You know, the whole idea about special interest themes, making a statement that you are both passionate about during your union.

Take the couple in the picture for instance, their sign says "Just Hitched and Not to a Carriage!" Clever!

Personally though, I think the horse-drawn carriage idea is cheesy and romantic all at once. But then again, I'm an omnivore.

Who Needs Friends When You Have Craigslist?

I had to post this because I thought it was hilarious. The site recently created a "Best of Craigslist" section voted by readers. Awesome, right? Craigslist is more a form of entertainment for wackos now than it is about serious business, but I digress.

I have to admit... I have a secret dream that some dashing fellow would write about me in missed encounters section - what a girl can dream right?! Woops, sorry I digressed again. Anyway...

Here's an idea: if you need some bridesmaids why not post an ad on craigslist? This girl did.

Revelations were made. European satin FTW. Neutral colors might not be so bad. I need some spanks and can't eat carbs for the rest of my life and for the love of GOD no more consumption of anything that might cause me to retain water. Seriously. In all honesty though, I am so ready to kick the next round's ass. I am feeling like Rocky about to battle the Russian dude. Those dresses will NOT knock me out next time!

Runaway Bride (Literally)

Here's a fun way to get married (if you are as out there as I am). For those of you who don't know, I am an endurance athlete/distance runner and plan to celebrate my 29th birthday in Las Vegas by running one of the world famous Rock & Roll Marathon courses (the Half Marathon). Since it is Las Vegas after all, what course wouldn't be complete with an option for a RUN THROUGH MARRIAGE. That's right, you can get married while you are running the half marathon or marathon course. You can even invite your guests to run with you!

How cool would that be?! (Cue: sound of crickets.)

Is this why I'm single? Seriously. Hehe, I'm almost relieved that I have yet to find my kooky, colourful and just as addicted to running counterpart because I'm 100% certain my mother would pass out on the course as one of the guests. Also, Westside Wedding has bad knees and we can't have her injured pre wedding day!

In case you are curious here's the link to the site to register. If you end up doing this... let us know! I'll be green with envy! We'll be sure to video what we can while we're out there, kicking major race butt of course! And by we, I mean Westside Wedding, this girl (meaning me) has to a race to run!

Pantone Wedding

When it comes to choosing colors, I know it is pretty hard to find the "exact" shade of yellow, blue, grey, etc. to match your vision, especially considering all the different areas that come into play (invites, dresses, etc.)

The Dessy Group has a pretty neat tool called "PANTONE Wedding" that lets you share your inspiration board with all of your wedding vendors. Pantone colors are a standard in the print industry, so when you have the color code and order something using Pantone, you know you will get *exactly* what you ask for. It also helps with choosing color combinations (better than a color wheel would if you ask me) if you are in that stage of planning.

Maid of Honor Checklist

I came across a pretty thorough and cool Maid of Honor checklist from lovetoknow.com.

I toggle between having excel sheets and the paper pen method of doing things, I think with all the wedding stuff going old school would be the best way to know.

Click here for the printable checklist.

Be organized! The Maid of Honor is to remain cool, calm, collected at ALL TIMES (see picture).

LA: A High Concentration of Sensitive Men

Although not directly wedding-related, I wanted to share with all you lovely ladies an interesting article I came across today in LAist."Study says LA guys (tied with SF) are most sensitive."

Not really quite sure what to think or say about those results. In talking to WestsideWedding about it, the more sensitive the guy, does that really mean the better? In my mind, it means more game playing, more cloak and dagger type of work... more egos being involved rather than being honest and as recent yoga classes have taught me "leading with your heart."

The most ironic part about the whole deal is I used to DATE the guy who wrote the article for LAist. By date, I mean we went on one date and I was so abashed by his insensitivity (taking out a 10 bucks and declaring that I put in the rest of the money, trying to wield me over to the rooftop of not so romantic bad-part-of-Hollywood apartment and me politely excusing myself abruptly during the whole debacle) that it ended right before it started.

But you can judge for yourselves on what you think about the results. Click here for the article.

MOH: Recommended Reading

Like any great player or actor in the game of life, one must make sure that they are completely prepping for their big role... Because of this, I have recently added to my library the following books purchased on Amazon: Just another day in one of several lives! I'll be posting reviews on these books in the next following few weeks. Stay tuned!

DIY: How Far Should You Go?

I must say that I'm a big fan of the *personal* touch. I like to make things and I know when it comes to weddings and showers, it's of the utmost of importance that the overall visuals (colors, themes, fabrics) must speak to the person or persons involved and really give a peek into their soul... Or something like that.

I've been doing a lot of research into how to effectively dabble into screen printing since I saw the amazing job our friend Stephen did with screen printing his own posters for an event he threw. It was basically a two-color process and he hand made the posters himself! The combination of two colors on the right parchment along with dramatic lines really impressed me - so of course I wanted to make one myself!

Not too long after I started obsessing on *how* to go about screen printing things for the various parties - i.e. the bridal shower and bachelorette party - I noticed a really affordable kit from urbanoutfitters ($64) - although not sure how commited I can get to it - but at least when it comes to this type of project, money would definitely not be an issue!

I'll come back to this idea once I get a headcount on how many people will be involved in the shindigs I'm in charge of... time might be better spent allocating enough booze (or schmoozing for deals on venues).

Maid of Honor-ing (First Post)

Yay! Very excited to be able to guest blog on Westside Wedding! Here goes:

As a first time Maid of Honor I find myself doing some side research during the day on the fun stuff I get to plan (acquiring strippers and hotels in Vegas and what not... choreographing reception dances - you know...), and by chance happened upon the weirdness that is DisneyBRIDAL. Am I the only one that doesn't know about this?

http://www.disneybridal.com/

I have to admit, I do like the belle wedding dress. (But it's not white... what is Mickey trying to say with that one?!)

MOH now guest blogging!

{cousin/MOH is to the left in red & yours truly is to the right, btw she was wearing black shows and I was wearing red because even now we sometimes coordinate outfits he he}
I'm so excited to tell you all that my MOH, aka cousin, aka partner in crime is going to be guest blogging SQUEAL!!!!!! She is an extremely savy social networker. She is actually the one that first introduced me to such Internet social networking as instant messaging, email, myspace, blogging, google reader, twitter etc etc. I still remember when I was a student at UCLA and she was at Yale, she kept telling me to check my email and to get on the instant message band wagon, back then (1997) it was fairly new and email looked nothing like it does now. To this day she is the person I email the most (via google).
When I started blogging about a month ago, I did not tell anyone, not even her because I was not sure if I could do it. I'm a very private person and it's hard for me to open up, but after reading so many wedding blogs in the past 2 months, I thought I needed to do my part and contribute. I'm so glad that I did because everyone in the wedding blogosphere is so supportive and sweet. I actually almost quit 2 days into it but then I received my first comments from chicncheap, anna and the ring & The Frugal Fabulous Bride and all of a sudden I felt connected and looked forward to experiencing the wedding planning with all you in the world wide web.
But I digress as I usually do! After a month I told my cousin/MOH about my blog (she is still the only one that knows about it) and she has been so supportive! So supportive that she said she would guest blog!!! AHH!!! I love that she is going to post because it will give a unique perspective to this wedding planning, we mostly hear about the bride's side of the planning, but there is alot of planning going on with the MOH too - bachelorette parties, showers, dress shopping, keeping bride sane....
I hope you all enjoy her posts as much as I know I will!
Do you have a blog and if so do yor friends and family know about it?
